“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.” Colossians 1:12 (KJV)
“By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.” Hebrews 11:22 (KJV)
I was reared in the Texas Panhandle (Castro County) near the small German-Irish community of Nazareth. Nazareth’s claim to fame is its High School girls’ basketball team boasting 15 state championships in 20 years. However, the heart of the community is a Catholic cathedral called Holy Family Church. North of the structure is the church’s cemetery. In one area of this cemetery lies the final resting place of many of my relatives. One relative interned is my Uncle Anthony who we called Tony.

(Holy Family Parish, Nazareth, TX as found at www.hfph.org)
Uncle Tony was a career Air Force officer who traveled the world and eventually settled in Colorado Springs, CO but mentally he never left home. His love of Nazareth, and his love for his parents’ farm (he referred to it as the “home place”) made him determined to be buried at Nazareth. Here was a man who could have been buried in the national cemetery of his choice, but he rejected such in order to acquire his dream. He wanted to come home.I was present the day his hearse arrived at Holy Family Church. In a moving tribute of welcome, the cathedral bells began ringing a joyous tone. An entourage of pallbearers marched from the cathedral and took up the casket bearing Tony’ remains. As they entered the cathedral’s community center, it became apparent Tony acquired his dream. He had come home.
The Bible tells us Joseph believed the children of Israel would eventually acquire a promise land. He believed this with such intensity he gave instructions his bones were to be moved from Egypt to the place of God’s provision. When we commend ourselves into the hands of God and enter into a personal relationship with Him, we are systematically making an announcement to the world that we are committed to Him no matter what befalls us. Such an act declares we are convinced our home is not on earth, but within the kingdom of God. Such an act bares testimony we believe God will bring us to that eternal place whereby we can declare we have finally come home.
