It is standard procedure for most businesses to conduct annual Suicide Awareness and Prevention classes. The traditional hour of blah...blah...blah most likely consisting of slides from years ago, and dusty manuscripts with stats from the 1970's.

This is sad news, because now is the time updated quality training on this subject should happen. You may ask: Why? Short answer, because we are entering the traditional period when the greatest number of suicides occur in our nation. (Man on Stairs Image as found at StepsofDespair.jpg)

For many years, it was believed the holiday seasons (mid November through mid January) were the time most suicides occur. National research (conducted over the last twenty-five years) have proved this to be erroneous.

Suicide is one of the three leading causes of death among people aged 15-35. This signifies a drastic demographical change as prior 1999 suicide was primarily a concern among the elderly.

In 1999 the World Health Organization (WHO) released findings indicating approximately one million people die annually by suicide. That represents roughly one death every 40 seconds.
 
Suicides are increasing in the United States.
a.    In 2001 there were 30,622 reported suicides
b.    In 2002 there were 31,655 reported suicides
c.    In 2003 there were 31,484 reported suicides
d.    In 2004 there were 32,439 reported suicides
e.    In 2005 there were 32,637 reported suicides
f.     In 2006 there were 33,300 reported suicides

I am an advocate and trainer of Suicide Intervention Skills. I have trained hundreds of individuals in basic intervention skills. Many of my students, using these skills, have saved others who were “at risk” for suicide.

There is a significant difference between Suicide Prevention and Suicide Intervention and it is best understood by comparing it with the following analogy.
